Facing the sea, in the southernmost point of Europe and closest point to Africa, Tarifa is one of the coastal cities with greater tourist projection, becoming the mecca of windsurfing and kitesurfing. In its many prehistoric remains (as the naturalistic paintings of the Cueva del Moro and the necropolis of Algarbes) adds the Phoenician remains of the Isla de las Palomas and especially those of Roman times, with the valuable city of Baelo Claudia, the finding most valuable archaeological across the province. Muslims called it Al-Yazirat Tarif and it has been an important strategic point as border area, stronghold against pirate raids and military point against the British possessions of Gibraltar.
