Baelo Claudia Roman Ruins

Towering over the Bolonia inlet, the roman city of Baelo Claudia is located and there we can see all defining elements of a typical roman city, all within an unsurpassed natural environment. We recommend that you start your visit at the Visitors Centre and Museum and then continue on to the city where we can admire an aqueduct, the ramparts, the decumanus maximus or main road that goes from east to west and which boasts an outstanding flooring of Tarifa cut stone, and also the cross maximus (which is the main road crossing from the north to the south).
Where both roads meet we shall find the forum, centre of all public life and to which the Basilica opens with its columns and its reproduction statue of Trajan, as well as other minor public buildings, stores (tabernae) and the Macellum or marketplace. Presiding over the site is the prayer or cult area that houses temples dedicated to the Capitoline triad (Jupiter, Juno and Minerva) and to the Egyptian goddess Isis. We can also admire a bathhouse and a well preserved theatre, the latter having regained its status and being used for various shows.

By the beach we can see the cetariae or fish and garum (fermented fish sauce) salting factories which allowed for the city to prosper. In them we can see the basins where the fish were deposited together with salt.

Many cultural activities may be done around the Baelo Claudia archaeological ensemble, all of which are free but must be scheduled in advance. We may enjoy educational workshops and guided dramatized visits for students and the general public alike, or maybe a theatre show, classical or contemporary, or a concert, sometimes even taking advantage of the magical nights of the Tarifa summer.

From January 1st to March 31st and from September 16th to December 31st
Tuesday to Saturday: from 09:00 to 17:30. Sundays and public holidays: from 09:00 to 15:30. Monday: closed.

From April 1st to June 15th
Tuesday to Saturday: from 09:00 to 19:30. Sundays and public holidays: from 09:00 to 15:30. Monday: closed.

Summer season: from June 16th to September 15th
Tuesday to Sunday (public holidays inc.): from 09:00 to 15:30. Monday: closed.

Access is allowed until 30 minutes before closing time.

Museums and archaeological ensembles shall be open all public holidays, including local holidays, except for the period from January 1st to January 6th, May 1st and December 24th and 25th.

In relation to the activities offered to the general public (no groups), all Wednesdays (except for April 15th and those Wednesdays that fall on a public holiday) a free guided visit shall be arranged for all those who may wish to join.
